Exhibition about the States Chamber at the Public Hall

An exhibition about the States Chamber will go 'on tour' around the Parishes during the second half of 2017 and will be with us in The Public Hall in St Martin from 12th to 26th October

The current States Chamber was opened and used for the first time on 21st June 1887.  That was the day on which Queen Victoria celebrated her Golden Jubilee and the Chamber's opening formed part of the festivities.  Prior to that time, the States Assembly had shared facilities with the Royal Court; it was only on that day in 1887 that the Assembly was provided with a dedicated room for its use befitting its status as the Island's parliament.  The opening of the Chamber was therefore a crucial stage in the development of the States.

To mark the Chamber's 130th anniversary, the States Greffe is organising an exhibition that will tell the story of how it came to be built where it sits today – a decision that followed several years of lively discussion and debate.

The exhibition will be launched on Wednesday 21st June 2017, the day of the anniversary itself.  It will initially be housed in the Royal Court and States Building before touring the other parishes.
